I have 3 years of teaching experiences, with students ranging from 9 years old to 30 years old. I teach both examination based and leisure based. I currently teaching up to grade 5.
Teaching Area

Teach At Home And Where
No
Teaching Methods
For examination-based students, we will be using ABRSM materials. For beginners, we will start off using Alfred’s pathways to artistry and Alfred’s lesson books. For students playing for leisure, we play songs of their choices after they are well trained in their basic techniques. Communication is key. Hence I make sure I understand my students well. It is important to cater to each student’s own learning style as well.
Ms Michelle Lim

– ABRSM Piano Practical Grade 8
Teaching Experience
I have been teaching for 2-3 years, have some ABRSM certificates and videos of my students. I taught students from aged 3.5 to young adults/retirees.
Teaching Area
North East, Central of Singapore
Teach At Home And Where
Yes
Teaching Methods
My teaching beliefs are based on fundamental concepts, for example rhythm is movement(dalcroze). For example, technique on the piano, has to do with learning how to relax and knowing how fingers should depress, how heavy the keys actually are. Relaxation is the basis of all technical challenges because the aim is to do it with as much ease and convenience as possible. Only then, when approaching more technically demanding situations, we are able to improve and manage the situation. They also need to learn to make use of their arm, realise that there can be different touches on the keyboard which gives a different sound and hence, mood.
I do not believe that sending students to ABRSM exams should be an end goal. In order for a student to do well in the exam, there are several factors that needs to be in place. Eventually, I find that what needs to happen is that it has to be established irregardless of whether there are any exams which are signed up for. What i dont agree with is just practicing for the examinations, as for me, the exam is limiting and what we actually cover is not comprehensive. The main factors as i mentioned are:
- Consistency in practice
- Efficiency of practice
- Aural awareness, consciousness
- Technical ability, control
- Time
I have also realised that time is essential for concepts to be understood, digested and practiced before it becomes a cultivated habit which would pave a way for a smoother examination experience
Ms Chen Jinci
Qualifications
Diploma in Piano Performance ATCL (Trinity, U.K.)
Grade 8 Piano and Grade 5 Theory, currently pursuing Grade 8 Theory (ABRSM, U.K.)
Certificate in Music Therapy with Distinction (CoE, U.K.)
Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach
Teaching Experience
Ms Jinci has been playing for her church’s youth ministry for more than 15 years and has served as a worship service pianist for more than 5 years. She also spent a year as a keyboardist in NUS Cultural Activities Club, where she played songs from popular artistes with the likes of Jay Chou and Fish Leong.
She started learning the piano at the age of 5 and her passion for music led her to pick up the harmonica in her junior college years. As the President, she led the Harmonica Band comprising over 100 members through regular and effective practices in preparation for the annual concert. She wrote and arranged scores from popular contemporary songs suitable for the harmonica. For the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2007, she was the piano accompanist for the band which clinched Gold in the competition.
Ms Jinci left her corporate job in human resource talent management to begin full-time piano teaching. She is currently teaching a number of students across various grades, ranging from ages 9 to 29. Adults who would like to play for leisure or learn chords for hymn or pop playing are more than welcomed too!
Teaching Area
– Sengkang, Opposite Sengkang MRT station (Home Studio)
Teaching Methods
Ms Jinci strongly believes that piano lessons should be fun! To make lessons fun and engaging, her lessons include using flashcards on rhythmic structures of music, sharing stories, listening to favourite songs and transcribing music, and/or using the LCD writing board for doodling of concepts. She also believes sight-reading, aural training, playing by chords, music theory etc. can be taught in an integrated manner which makes it more interesting for the students.
For students interested in learning pop songs, she will teach them chords harmony and improvisation by analyzing the chord structures e.g. Maj7 chords, extended chords 9th/11th/13th, suspended chords, inversions, dominant 7th/diminished/augmented chords. Most importantly, her students choose the piece they wish to learn as they would be most motivated to learn it e.g. Yiruma’s Kiss the Rain and Fairytale, Stay with Me OST.
As a conceptual teacher and learner, she enjoys connecting music concepts to relatable stories to aid in understanding and application. e.g. training sense of rhythm, counting and expression.
It’s also important for students to cultivate their musicality by teaching them techniques such as:
– listening to the tone and their touch of the piano as they play
– learning to relax
– always ending their practice sessions with slow practice
– learning Mental Play
– learning play by ear skills and how to play by chords for improvisation
As a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, Jinci is passionate about helping each student discover his/her strengths and develop his/her music potential in life. With Individualization and Ideation as her top strengths, she will customise my teaching method according to each student’s learning style and motivate them by making each lesson fun and refreshing!

With such flexibility in his teaching methods, he is able to sustain his students’ motivation to learn while maximizing their musical potential to the fullest
Piano Teacher, About Music School – June 2016 to October 2016
As a piano teacher, Shawn has learned many invaluable lessons. He learned to cope with pressure when he was assigned various tasks such as transposing of songs, rearranging of instrumentation, notating of orchestrations and conducting of performances amongst students with different instruments.
Honed with experiences in piano teaching, he was able to be innovative and flexible in his teaching methods. At About Music, he has taught students ranging from the age of 6 to the age of 40. Aside from teaching ABRSM Practical and Theory, he has also taught Aural Training and Transposing of Pop songs
Music Educator, Cristofori Music School – February 2011 to July 2012
As a music educator, his daily routine included teaching piano classes, planning of curriculums for students and researching of new teaching methods to put into practice during piano classes. Occasionally, he would be assigned to a group class, with students ranging from 7 to 12 years old. Therefore, this required him to manage my time wisely amidst the piano classes in order to brainstorm and search for fun and interactive music related activities for the group classes.
This job has taught him to be patient and understanding whenever his students struggle to grasp my method of teaching. During his stint at Cristofori, he taught students ranging from the age of 4 to the age of 60, from Young Children Beginners and Adult Beginners to ABRSM Grade 5. All of my students whom he has registered for ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations have passed, with many achieving merits and distinctions.
Teaching Methods
Having majored in music under the tutelage of renowned Mr. Benjamin Loh, Shawn has equipped himself with various unique methods of practice and teaching, hence is capable of maximising the potential talents of his students! One of the unique methods of practice is mental practice, whereby one incorporates the conscious mind into focused practice, hence maximising the practices of the student.

Teach At Home And Where : Yes
Teaching Methods
I believe that there’s a gift in every student who learns music, and hence first and foremost it is passion. It is the amalgamating point of learning and where students would truly appreciate music
Skills enhancement through active feedback and constructive advice. Rather than the typical lesson classroom setting where students are cooked under pressure, and some even crack under pressure, my piano studio would adopt a healthier learning styles both for teachers and students to grow and really mature. As much as discipline may be concerned, i believe that it may be fostered and learnt as effectively with a amiable and positive relationship between students and teachers
Flexibility in skills application. It is quintessential for every musician to be able to apply their skills with great flexibility and tenacity. Through my teaching methods, i hope to foster a generation of musicians who are able to execute their skills in different fields of specialization, and so to remain relevant despite the change in time and course.
