Benefits of Piano Lessons for Your Child
Learning to play piano can be a wonderful experience for a child. Going to lessons and practicing at home can teach a child patience, attention to detail, and perseverance. Additionally, learning to play and learning music theory can be very intellectually stimulating for a young child and can help them grow into an intelligent and well-balanced adult. Children who start learning piano at an early age can continue their lessons until they become an extremely skilled player, and at that point can work to earn a Grade 8, Trinity Piano Diploma, or ABRSM Piano Diploma in Singapore. Some of our students have even progressed to NAFA (Nanyang Acadamy of Fine Arts) and graduated.
However, some children have a hard time learning piano. Others get discouraged, bored, or lose motivation, and this can prevent them from sticking with piano lessons long enough to develop lifelong skill and dedication. Music is a skill that every kid should learn as it is an art form that helps to express feelings without words. We know the importance of this and this is how we teach kids in our piano lessons program.
Jenny has been teaching piano lessons for kids in Singapore for many years, and she knows how to keep children engaged and excited about piano lessons. Using activities and games, as well as individual attention and praise, she can make sure that each student is motivated to continue learning. Our piano lessons are conducted for kids of all ages whether they have a musical background or not. Our program helps them to learn the basic piano skills like playing, hearing and reading the notes. Through our Piano Lessons your child will gain the confidence and discipline in life. He will also have a better mental concentration and memory.
Motivating Your Child for Home Piano Practice
Sometimes a child will have problems feeling motivated to practice at home. This could be caused by them not knowing what to practise, practicing a piece that is too advanced or learning pieces that aren’t interesting to them. Jenny works with each student to make sure that they are motivated to practise at home and that they are learning pieces that are appropriate and interesting to them.
In Singapore especially sometimes the child stops progressing and isn’t able to advance to the next level of instruction. Some causes of this may be that the child is using the wrong practising method or that the child has poor technique. Unfortunately these bad habits reinforce themselves, and the longer a child practises incorrectly, the harder it will be to fix. Jenny works with her students to make sure that each has a solid foundation and is using proper technique and practising methods. This ensures that each is able to continue to improve and grow after each lesson.
In Singapore most piano lessons for young children are arranged in the form of groups. By having group lessons, it helps to motivate the child to perform even better from his other group members. To make our lessons more interesting competition and piano-related quizzes are held that will motivate your child to perform the best in order to gain the reward. When your kid appreciates music by playing piano, he will understand that how valuable it is to learn this special artistic skill. Thus, he will be motivated to excel in this art form.
Starting Age for Children / Early Childhood Music
It is a well know fact that there is no age limit or minimum age to learn music. New research from Stanford psychologists has proven that by talking more to their toddler, the parents can enable the child learn to process language more quickly. Likewise for music, early exposure to music enables a child to develop motor skills and listening ability. Thus, the best-recommended age to learn music is the early childhood. As music helps a child to learn a lot about language, pattern determination, literacy and even mathematical concepts.
In Singapore kiasu parents send their children for enrichment classes. So get your child to attend Piano Lessons for their proper mental development. We know that it is never too young to learn music. Thus, even toddlers when to attend the music appreciation class learn something like how to dance with the rhythms. Therefore, it is time to start the music lessons of your children with 30 minutes starting a session that can be increased gradually.
Choosing a Teacher for Your Child
Have an appropriate teacher that can connect to your child one of the vital aspects of ensuring your child learns music. A piano teacher should provide your child with the perfect guidance and instructions regarding music. Make sure that the teacher is motivating your child by showing interest in your child.
Basic Piano Techniques for kids
Like ballet dancing, at the early stages of Piano Lessons, the child is taught the following
- Read the basic notes via cartoon characters.
- Sitting posture
- Counting and rhythms through clapping
- Finger techniques
- Finger strengthen exercise
- Pieces and composers via story telling
To produce a beautiful tone, The teacher will teach your child to strike the keys and appreciate the tone that comes from it. Cartoon characters are named for each note, for example “C” for Cat and “D” for Dog. This will motivate and increase confidence of your child.
My Personal Experience in Teaching My Child Piano Lessons
Patience and motivation is important. With my knowledge of piano pedagogy for kids and a great deal of patience, finally my 2-year-old toddler can play a popular piece and sing love song to me. My heart melted when lyrics came to “love is all that i can give to you”. I appreciate her patience to practise with me daily and feel lucky that she never complain of getting bored of the songs. We enjoyed playing together.
I started piano lessons for my own kid in Singapore when she turned 1 year old. As my piano studio is at home, she was inspired by the beautiful piano music that my students played everyday and one day she asked for piano lessons with me. Every morning she woke me up around 7 and she will pull me into the music room for piano lessons. As a stay at home working mother, I am lucky to be able to give piano lessons to my own child. As her finger bones are still very soft I started her with nursery songs and solfege singing.
After some warm up on listening exercises, I taught her some easy ways of notes recognition by using whiteboard and magnetic animal pictures such as cat, dog, elephant, fish to recognise the musical notes CDEF. I also paste pop up stickers on the keyboard, telling her that the music notes are under the ‘roof’ of 2 black keys, the cat stays at first room, and followed by its friend dog, then these 2 animals are protected by elephant and next to them there is a fish and girl swimming in the river… and so on. This sets the foundation for sight reading skills to be taught later.
Through all these fun musical games my child picked up notes recognition very quickly. The first piano piece that I taught her when she turned 2 years old was ‘Mary had a little lamb’, after placing stickers on the notes of Cat, Dog, Elephant, Fish, Girl, I guide her hand to press the keys with her index fingers, singing the following notes
EDCD EEE DDD EEE
EDCD EEEC DDEDC
At 2 years old I didn’t expect her to practise with different fingering as her brain at such tender age was still unable to control and practise with independent fingerings.
This year she just turned 3 and I really appreciate her patience to continue daily home practice with me, using the same song ‘Mary had a little lamb’, after practising for 1 year she is very familiar with her notes and position of keys, now she is ready to practise with proper fingering, I made her lift up the fingers high after striking each key and press every single note loudly and firmly to build up muscle memory of the notes.
Besides practising at home, I brought her to different locations for piano practice, I am very glad that street piano is available now in Singapore at a different location. You can visit streetpianos.com to see the location of 25 pianos. Other than that our another favourite location is esplanade library’s piano practice room. We can see the nice scenery of Singapore river through the window beside the piano.
