During my internships at various child care centres, I applied my knowledge and background in music to teach and prepare materials for various subjects for young children. I discovered that I could use music to teach language and literacy, mathematical concepts, creative arts and even develop their motor skills through music.
I excelled in my practicum and went on to get a job in Cristofori music school. Looking at my early childhood background, I was trained by the management to conduct the early childhood music program: Music for Little Mozarts, along with taking up one-to-one students for exam preparations.
I have also taught in Emmanuel music school and joined Northwood music as an instructor for the kinder beat and encore program to conduct group classes for children. Currently, I teach classical music and help students to prepare for graded exams. I am able to engage very young children as soon as they have basic penmanship skills such as tracing. I strongly believe in child directed learning, and every child learns differently at their own pace. Hence, I customise my teachings differently for every child. I also teach adult students who are interested to go for graded exams, as well as leisure learning.

Simon is an expressive pianist and composer who draws his inspirations from a diverse range of musical traditions, including Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, R&B, Brazillian, and Afro-Cuban. His artistic development began early in his childhood at the age of 5, when he first took music lessons on the Electone. As a child, Simon performed frequently and at 15, he represented Singapore at the Asia Electone Festival 2007, which was held at the Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld, Thailand, and clinched the 3rd Prize Award (Junior Section). It was through this experience that Simon resolved to pursue music as a lifelong passion.
Beginning in 2009, Simon studied Music and Audio Technology (DMAT) at Singapore Polytechnic where he became adept at music production and synthesis techniques. He was a receipient of the Singapore Polytechnic Scholarship (2009) and graduated with a Diploma with Merit in 2012. During his studies at Singapore Polytechnic, Simon began taking piano lessons with Zheng Yuxing, who instilled in him a profound interest and appreciation for the music of Jazz. Simon was particularly inspired, initially, by the music of Oscar Peterson.
In 2014, Simon auditioned into the Bright Young Things Jazz mentorship programme organized by the Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore, and was subsequently featured in the festival held at the Esplanade with The Last Train Home. Two months after, Simon performed as piano accompanist with the TAS Children’s Pop Choir at the Istana before President Tony Tan and Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong (head of state) Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and their wives.
?In the same year, Simon was awarded a scholarship to study at Berklee College Of Music, where he pursued a major in Professional Music, and studied under the instruction of many accomplished pianists, including Ray Santisi, Yoko Miwa, John Arcaro, Neil Olmstead, Dave Limina, and Joanne Brackeen. In his first semester at Berklee, Simon was approached by Spanish singer-songwriter, Guillermo Alvarez, to join Guille & The B. Band, a latin-jazz quintet lead by Guille himself. Through his involvement with the band, Simon became well-acquianted with Brazillian and Afro-Cuban piano styles, and he recorded two albums with the band: Berklee f’14 and Guille & The B. Band. In January 2016, the band began performing daily as a regular band aboard the luxurious MSC Divina cruise ship, expanding its expertise to a wide range of musical genres, such as Rock & Roll, Blues, Pop, Jazz, Latin, etc.
During the summer break of 2015, Simon performed as keyboardist with Flame of the Forest, a World and Fusion music instrumental trio based in Singapore. He recorded with the band’s debut EP, Flame of the Forest, and performed at the band’s EP debut launch held at Orchard Road’s Pedestrain’s Night.
?When he graduated in 2017, Simon was featured, amongst 16 other students of the graduating cohort, in an online article on Berklee’s webpage, titled Personifying Art’s Power, Class of 2017 Takes Reins. Simon is presently residing in Singapore as an active music teacher and performer.”
Experiences
Simon has held temporary piano teaching positions at a few music schools during summer breaks, such as About Music School, Ensemble Music School, Providence Care Centre. The teaching setting at these schools were mainly one-to-one up to 3 students at a time. Over the years, he has a few private students as well, and did an internship as an assistant music teacher as part my diploma coursework at Hillgrove Secondary School in 2011. In the course of my study at Berklee College of Music, he took a course, The Private Studio Teacher, for a semester, which touched upon the pedagogy of music.

Teaching Methods
When it comes to teaching, there is no one-size-fits-all method. Simon’s youngest student started with him at barely four years old, and his oldest student is in her sixties, and each of them have different goals when it comes to taking music lessons. Some of his students want to take graded examinations, while others want to learn music just as a pastime. Some of them love a good challenge, while others, particularly the youngest students, just want to have fun. Every student signed up for lessons with a different idea of what they are going to get out of it, and how much time and effort they are willing to put in to get what they want out of lessons. While some teachers might have you believe that there is a certain right ‘way’ to learn music, it is his experience that, considering all the different goals and varying aptitudes that students have, the best way to teach is to be adaptable to each individual student.
His goal as a teacher is for every student to take away from the lesson something valuable to them. For young students who just want to have fun, we would play all sorts of silly games – who can draw this faster, who can write that faster, who can earn more stars then the other, who’s better at hangman, and the list goes on. The catch is, he would incorporate the musical lessons into the games that we play, and the student would have learnt the lesson objective even before he or she realizes so.
For his adult beginner students who want to learn their favorite pop songs, he will strive to have them start playing real-world music (songs that you hear on the radio as opposed to generic music method book pieces) from day one, and most of them actually do! At the same time, He does not skimp on the basics, such as note reading, rhythms, etc. The reason he is able to do this is because he creates customized music arrangements that are simple enough for the beginner to play, and he uses a chordal approach for a start, which helps simplify things for many beginners. He also use play-along tracks for my lessons to keep things interesting!
For students taking graded examinations, he emphasizes on developing good practice strategies and maximizing practice efficiency. Practice is not a mere matter of mindless repetition, but it is a process of self-awareness and thoughtful problem solving, and the cultivation of the link between one’s mind and physical reflex. He also encourages students to listen as often as they can, to good recordings of the exam pieces they are playing; having a strong mental imprint of how a good performance of a piece should sound like can be one of the best self-checking teachers for student. It naturally informs the performance of a piece and helps students develop their own ideas of going beyond what’s written on the score.
For students taking advanced Pop piano lessons, he teaches improvisation using a systematic approach starting from basic left hand accompaniment patterns, chord theory and drills, followed by basic textural development strategies such as block chords, partial chords and open interval harmonisations, octaves, using the different ranges of the piano strategically, and subsequently advanced two-handed arpeggiation, rhythmic variations, and different stylistic grooves and fills. ”
As a teacher, Simon strive for his students to find joy in pursuing music. Each student is a unique individual with different strengths and goals. He begins by getting to know them, and finding out what motivates them, in order to strategize my teaching, and align, as best as possible, musical goals with the student’s personal interests.
Simon emphasize on listening in order to develop a musical taste towards performance, instead of viewing a score as a mere set of instructions to be followed. In a long run, having a musical ear naturally informs the performance direction and in turn, technical requirements.

Kayley is currently undertaking her Diploma in Music Performance (ABRSM). She has been learning music since the age of five and has since explored other musical instruments such as guzheng and ukulele in her schooling days.
Kayley has acquired working experience with children and therefore has the ability to interact well with young students. Colourful illustrations and graphics are presented for younger students in her lesson to enable them to grasp the basic concept of music in an interesting manner. At times, use of technologies such as phone apps may also be used to boost one’s learning.
For budding pianists, she inculcates directions for classical techniques and offers classic style pieces for students to master. For students preparing for practical exams, her lessons include weekly scales training to help students develop finger strength and coordination consistently in preparation for the scales component required for exam. It also includes choosing of the appropriate music scores in addition to teaching of sight reading skills and playing techniques to the students.
She believes in cultivating a strong basic foundation from the start so that students can progress steadily in their learning. Interesting visuals and teaching methods are often adopted in her approach to enhance her lesson content. She also plans her lessons in a way that is tailored to the needs and learning style of each student. Her motivation stems from seeing students’ musical capabilities improve with each lesson and most importantly, simply enjoying piano playing as they continue to make advancements in their music journey.

Teaching Methods
As a performing artist, I often experience the ability of music to motivate and uplift the soul. Hence, coming into contact with music – especially European classical music, which has so much history and genius behind it – can be very beneficial to young children. However, anyone can experience the magical powers of music. As an educator, I seek to inspire and motivate students so that they can derive joy from music. However, I also instil a certain amount of discipline and routine into each lesson in order to yield tangible results. As a result, my students always go home feeling joyful and motivated to get better each time
