Discipline is key; attitude over aptitude
As an educator, Ms Anna believes that she is not purely imparting piano playing skills and developing students’ musical abilities and techniques. Rather, she believes that music teaching is a way of developing students’ discipline and inculcating them a culture of humility and “learnability”. She strongly believes that every student’s key ingredient to succeeding, in many aspects in life, is self-discipline. By that, she places an emphasis in her lessons to character-building without having to lose out on student’s progress in learning piano.
Every student is one-of-a-kind
There is no one-fit-all model. As she believes that every student has different sets of interests since they come from very different backgrounds. However different the practice repertoires may be assigned to the students, the agendas and students’ progress will always depend on whether the pieces chosen for them are tailor-made to their needs. She does her very best to help students to improve by consistently upgrading and refreshing my personal repertoires so as to ensure that students’ optimal learning.
In examinations and choosing particular pieces provided by the examination boards, she will always ensure that students are able to bring out the best of the pieces with their interests and musical inclinations in consideration. This is to ensure that students remain interested and still be able to develop a set of repertoires that is able to bring out the very best of their potential.
Proper Foundation is Quintessential
She believe that students ought to develop the skills required to play the piano correctly in order to deliver the finest in every piece and to ensure that their progress remains at an increasingly positive gradient. This is also to ensure that they can become independent in their piano learning and music education as they progress to the more advanced stages in piano learning.
Ms Betty Chong
As a teacher, I will constantly help students to keep a good seating position and hand
posture. It helps a musician to use his/her energy efficiently and get rid of muscles injury.
Music is not happening when your fingers press the keys, or the hammer hitting the strings.
It happens when you feel it. Listening skill helps a musician to make a music that can
communicate with the audience.
We have inexhaustible passion towards music because we exploring music. How to keep a
student’s interest in music if they only know how to hit the 88 keys on the piano? Not only as
a teacher, but also as a musician, I willing to share all my knowledge on music after lesson
time, not only for piano and classical music, also on technology using, composing,
appreciation on pop style, or other musical instruments. On the lesson, I also give
opportunities to allow students to be creative. To keep student’s interest while practicing, I
also composed for my students to solve their technical problem according to their technical
level, their favorite musical style, and age.
Rhythmic playing will not effectively gain through clapping and saying 1234. When we feel
the rhythm, we might move our body, or sing along. Rhythm gain through our whole body
more effectively. The student might need to do some body movement to feel the rhythm in
the music, then apply it to their playing.
As an educator, I’m not only seeking for student’s good result on a certificate but also their
further development. They might not work as a musician in the future, but a good learning
attitude and positive thinking will gain through their music learning process, and make
benefits to their daily life.
