Joycelyn Chng began studying the piano at age five. After her A levels, she entered the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and received her Bachelor of Arts (majoring in English Language and Music) and a Diploma in Education. She then went on to study at the College of Fine Arts, Boston University where she was conferred a Master of Music, Music Education.
An experienced educator, Joycelyn has taught in a wide variety of contexts. A classroom music teacher and individual instrumental tutor for many years, she has taught students ranging from toddlers to retirees. She is currently a private instrumental tutor for piano, voice, flute and lectures part-time at Singapore Raffles Music College. She is also a much sought after piano accompanist, having accompanied numerous instrumentalists for their instrumental examinations and performances. She aims to inspire students to know more and find the real joy of music-making.
In 1994, she was amongst 8 students whose original composition was premiered by the Singapore Wind Symphony as part of the Arts Festival Fringe Event. She has since written a number of other arrangements for instrumental ensembles and choruses.
Joycelyn has also directed school bands and choirs and is currently the choral director of the Vocal Ensemble in Singapore Raffles Music College where she lectures part time. She is also the music director of both the children and youth choirs in a church. Joycelyn is also an active performer and has sung with Celebration Chorus, played the flute and piano with Audio Image Wind Ensemble and WestWinds. She is currently available for home lessons. Ms Tan started learning leisure piano only as an adult 20 years old. In 6 years, she was able to complete Grade 1, 3, 5 and 8 Practical and Theory Exams. Ms Tan hopes to inspire many more adults to go for their dreams, and she will want to be one of those who is able to inspire them. She would love to pass on my knowledge to those who are interested in learning.
Teaching methods will be adjusted as time goes by to ensure it suits each student’s learning style and progress. She would also love to learn from the experienced piano teachers on both teaching and playing. Ms Tan believes that learning never ends and it is never too late to learn

Aural training – My students will have sight singing, listening exercise and learned to clap the pulse according to the beat. This is important for students’ musical make-up and helps them to form an overall picture of their abilities.
Fingering practice – Learning Hanon, Czerny, scales and arpeggios help my students build up reliable technique and comprise a progressive development of essential instrumental skills.
Sight reading – It is essential in speeding up my students’ learning process when they work on the new piece.
