
When piano examination results arrive, one comment appears surprisingly often: “The performance lacks musical shape.”
Many students can play the correct notes, observe most of the dynamics and maintain a steady tempo, yet their performance still sounds flat. The notes seem to continue from beginning to end without direction, breathing or a clear sense of arrival.
Teachers may ask students to “play more musically,” “shape the phrase” or “add more expression.” However, these instructions can feel confusing if students do not understand what creates a phrase in the first place.
The answer is often found in music theory.
In my music theory lessons in Singapore, I help students discover that theory is not simply a written examination subject. It is a practical language that enables pianists to recognise musical structure, read more fluently, position their hands efficiently and shape each phrase with greater understanding.
Why Correct Notes Can Still Sound Unmusical
A common beginner habit is to read a score one note at a time:
“C, E, G … then D, F, A … then G, B, D.”
This may help a student locate individual keys, but it does not reveal the musical relationship between the notes. Reading every note separately is similar to reading a sentence one letter at a time. The reader may pronounce the letters correctly but miss the meaning of the words and the direction of the sentence.
Music also has its own grammar.
Notes combine to form intervals and chords. Chords move through harmonic progressions. These progressions create expectation, tension, relaxation and arrival. Cadences act like commas and full stops, helping us hear where one musical thought pauses or ends before the next begins.
Without this knowledge, students may see only a long stream of notes. With music theory knowledge, they begin to see organised musical ideas.
In music theory knowledge, harmony Reveals Where a Phrase Is Going
When students analyse the harmony in each bar, the score becomes much clearer. Instead of treating every note as a separate instruction, they begin to recognise familiar chord patterns moving forward through the music.
For example, a phrase may begin on the tonic chord, move through other harmonies, create tension on the dominant and finally return to the tonic at a perfect cadence. Another phrase may pause on the dominant at an imperfect cadence, giving the impression of a comma or a question that still requires an answer.
Once students identify the beginning, development and ending of a phrase, they can make more convincing interpretative decisions:
- Where does the phrase begin?
- Towards which chord is the music travelling?
- Where is the greatest harmonic tension?
- Which note or chord forms the emotional high point?
- Is the cadence a temporary pause or a final arrival?
- Where should the pianist breathe before beginning the next musical idea?
These questions turn dynamics into meaningful expression rather than decoration added to the score.
Finding the Commas and Full Stops in Music
A musical phrase can be compared with a spoken sentence. We do not speak every word with the same volume, stress and speed. Important words receive emphasis, the voice rises or intensifies as the thought develops, and it relaxes naturally at punctuation.
The same principle applies to piano playing.
Many phrases grow towards a central point and then relax as they approach a cadence. In such cases, a gradual crescendo followed by a diminuendo may create a natural arch. However, not every phrase has the same shape. Some begin strongly and withdraw; some build towards the final chord; others end with a question that must remain open.
Music theory lessons help students decide which shape is appropriate. Instead of automatically becoming louder in the middle of every phrase, they listen to the harmony and identify where the tension and resolution truly occur.
A perfect cadence may sound like a full stop. An imperfect cadence may sound like a comma or question mark. An interrupted cadence can create surprise, as though the sentence has suddenly changed direction. When students hear these differences, their phrasing becomes more natural and expressive.
Music Theory Makes Sight-Reading Faster
Chord recognition also improves sight-reading.
Imagine seeing the notes C–E–G together. A student who reads individual notes must identify C, then E, then G before preparing the fingers. A student who recognises a C major chord sees the entire group immediately as one familiar shape.
As the harmony changes, the hand can move towards the next chord position as a complete unit. The student prepares the shape of the hand in advance instead of searching for and placing one finger at a time.
This is similar to recognising a whole word at a glance rather than spelling it letter by letter.
During my music theory lessons Singapore students learn to identify triads, inversions, seventh chords, cadences and common harmonic progressions. This knowledge reduces hesitation because the eyes, mind and hands start working together:
- The eyes recognise the chord or pattern.
- The mind understands its function and direction.
- The hand prepares the complete position.
- The ear anticipates the expected sound.
Sight-reading then becomes a process of recognising patterns rather than decoding hundreds of unrelated notes.
Better Chord Knowledge Creates Better Hand Position
Harmony is not only an intellectual subject; it also influences piano technique.
When students understand that several notes belong to one chord, they can prepare the hand to cover the whole harmonic shape. The fingers, wrist and arm move together towards the correct position. This is more secure and efficient than stretching or adjusting each finger only after it reaches the keyboard.
For broken chords and arpeggiated accompaniments, the student can still imagine the complete chord underneath the individual notes. Even if the notes do not sound simultaneously, the hand understands the harmonic “home” to which they belong.
The student no longer memorises only a sequence of finger movements. The student understands the harmonic map of the piece.
Chords Also Suggest Mood, Colour and Emotion
After music theory students learn to analyse chords, I often notice a further improvement: their tone becomes more varied.
Different harmonies create different emotional possibilities. A major chord may sound bright, open, peaceful or triumphant, depending on its context. A minor chord may suggest tenderness, sadness, seriousness or mystery. An augmented chord can create expansion and uncertainty, while a diminished chord often introduces instability, tension or suspense.
These labels should not become rigid formulas. Not every major chord must sound happy, and not every minor chord must sound sad. Context matters. Nevertheless, recognising the quality and function of a chord encourages students to listen more deeply and search for an appropriate tone colour.
They may use a warmer touch for a tender resolution, a clearer sound for a bright major passage, or a more focused and tense colour for a diminished harmony. They also learn that changes of tone should be supported by touch, voicing, balance and pedalling—not merely by playing louder or softer.
Music theory therefore connects directly with artistic imagination.
From Written Analysis to Expressive Piano Playing
Some students think music theory lessons involve only completing exercises on paper. My teaching approach is to connect every theoretical idea with sound and practical piano playing.
When we identify a cadence, we listen to how it closes or suspends the phrase.
When we analyse a chord progression, we observe where the tension grows and where it resolves.
When we recognise an inversion, we consider how the bass line moves.
When we find a modulation, we explore how the new key changes the colour and direction of the music.
Students can then apply the same method to their examination pieces, diploma repertoire, sight-reading and memorisation.
This is why music theory lessons in Singapore can benefit not only students preparing for an ABRSM theory examination, but also pianists who want to improve their practical performance. Theory gives students a clear reason for their phrasing choices and helps them become more independent musicians.

Musical shape should not be created by randomly adding crescendos, diminuendos and rubato. It grows from understanding how the music is constructed.
When students can recognise chords, harmonic progressions and cadences, they begin to see phrases instead of isolated bars and notes. They know where a musical idea begins, where it gathers tension, where it breathes and where it finally arrives. This naturally improves their dynamics, tone colour, timing and sense of direction.
At the same time, chord recognition helps students read scores more quickly, prepare complete hand positions, memorise music logically and anticipate the sound before playing it. Music theory becomes the bridge connecting the eyes, mind, hands and ears.
