Course Duration
Grade 6 to 8 in 1 year (about 44 lessons). All of our students skip grade 6, 7 and take grade 8 theory exams directly.
It takes 44-50 lessons to get ready for grade 8 music theory. however teacher Jenny will make an assessments to shorten the time for you to get ready for grade 8 theory exam.
Skip grades 6 and 7 theory test papers and go directly to work on grade 8 music theory test papers directly. Grade 8 music theory exam focuses on music composition writing, and we provide 30 sets of test papers sample for you to practise.
Following time frame show the lessons plan on how we help students to get ready for grade 8 music theory exam confidently:
Lessons 1 to 6: Teacher Jenny teaches how to end musical phrases with cadences, the most elementary knowledge to end each melodic phrases musically, it resembles commas and full stops when writing anarticle, in music theory, these cadences, like commas and full stops, help to outline the musical structure systematically and are the basic skeleton to plan each section of music convincingly.
Lessons 7 to 12: During these lessons teacher Jenny teaches the rules for chords with root position, 1st, 2nd inversion and effective harmonic progression to be used in music composition. Some homework will be given to get familiar with the rules of harmonic progression.
Lessons 13 to 17: Teaches melodic decorations, there are 6 types of melodic decorations to be used in order to create a lyrical and wavy melodic lines with ascending or descending melodic direction and performance directions will be added according to phrases preceeding it.
Lessons 18 to 22: Teaches how to create tension by using suspension and figured bass in trio sonata music composition followed how to resolve these tension in grade 8 music composition.
Lessons 23 to 26: Teaches dominant 7th chords analysis, complex key identifications and modulations for music context, there are 4 important rules to be followed while identifying these modulations and chords. These 4 lessons cover the most crucial topics because if the student is unable to identify the key and modulations accurately, the entire composition will be out of shape and cadences are in the wrong key, resulting in failure of the exam.

How I conduct my lessons
No traditional method of covering theory text books which students will find it difficult! We use fun whiteboard games and quizzes which will make the lessons interesting. I have also compiled my own guide book that simplifies the concepts that are covered in the exams. Being a piano teacher myself I am able to demonstrate the concepts on my piano located in the studio itself.
I will also go through the past 5 years of theory exam papers which will serve as mock exams so that you are confident and thoroughly prepared before registration starts.
Grade 8 Melody Writing
In the grade 8 theory exams, most students struggle with the melody writing. For this I have introduced useful templates for students to write the melody. Also a comprehensive method for question 2 in completing missing parts for piano composition.
It takes about 44 lessons to complete the grade 6 to 8 theory, and I will ask students to practice on at least 4 booklets of past year papers before the registration of exam starts to make sure they can pass the test before they register.
