Our ABRSM piano exam candidates did very well this time. Congratulations to those who have passed grade 8 ABRSM piano exams at the age of 11. I am very proud of these students who took a six month crash course with me!
One of the most frequently asked questions by many parents is how I motivate my students to practise playing the piano at home. My answer is very simple:
1. I teach them note by note and phrase by phrase to make sure they land their finger correctly before they strike every single key. For those passages that they are not sure or keep making the same mistake, I will highlight them and get the students to focus on those difficult passages. I ensure that they get the wrong notes or rhythm correct before ending the lessons. From my experience the main reason for the kids who refuse to practise at home is because they are unable to overcome their difficulties and parents are unable to help them. So I make sure that all their technical difficulties are solved before ending the lesson. This helps them to practise at ease at home and reduces their stress level tremendously especially for those younger students.
2. I organize annual concerts for my students to encourage them to share their favorite tunes, to expose them to public performance and to gain self-confidence. Parents are very proud of them after they complete their performance before friends and other public audience.
In 2016, I will be organising a piano recital for my students at Steinway Piano Gallery. 20 of my students will be performing in the Steinway concert called ‘The Rising Star’.
