Let’s celebrate the exceptional achievements of our top grade winners in the recent Majesty Piano Competition 2024, where they excelled in ARSM, Trinity ATCL, Trinity LTCL, and LRSM exams.
After considering the difficulty of pieces and ensuring a reasonable playing standard, Stacie Teo and Au Cheng Kang have chosen two of the most difficult piano Sonatas which are the Tempest (No.17 in D minor) and Pathetique Sonatas (Op.13 No.8) by Beethoven. These two pieces have impressed the audience through the intensity of finger work and temperamental characteristic.
Au Cheng Kang received high praise from judge Josaphine Toh for his impressive understanding and interpretation in his performance. He is able to deliver the essence of the work with great technical control and attention to the performance directions. Yang Shufang and Teoh See Ying have chosen relatively easier pieces like Improvisation No.13 by Poulenc and Beethoven Piano Sonata in E Minor Op.90 No.27 which have soothing and lyrical melodic lines that conveyed the mood to touch the audiences heart and soul.
The performances of the 4 winners were a perfect combination of stunning, technically demanding and sentimental works. Students gained valuable knowledge and skills in timbre transformation through this competition. To convey accurate timbre in a spacious concert hall, finger strength must be adjusted, and I’m pleased they overcame anxiety with muscle exercises. We have meticulously prepared in class to ensure that every detail is vividly expressesed. I’m delighted that the students have cooperated by dividing the phrases into paragraphs and carefully considering them to maximize every timbre and emotional transition. The style of the composer is beautifully expressed.
As a teacher I am honored to be part of their music journey and hope this new milestone can continue to inspire them to strive for greater heights and more exciting future endeavors.
Finally, a very big thank you to the three judges for doing excellence job, all three of them have very high calibre in music, with master degree and are actively participating in music education platforms in Singapore for past 10 over years. Their fairness and contributions to adjudicate the competition were precious, and I would look forward to working with them in future music activities.
